Like other arctic dogs, Malamutes need a high-protein diet, which is, luckily, not as rigid as that of the Husky. Therefore, in addition to home cooked food for Malamutes, you still have other food options. The food may be dry, wet or powdered. Still, the most important thing to remember is to check the nutrient content on food packaging.

Dry food is the best for Malamutes because it has a high protein content of 21 – 27%, a fat content of 10-14% (or 24-30% protein, 14-20% fat for highly active dogs). Canned food usually contains only about 12% of protein, and soft food contains about 20%. The most suitable protein level for a normal Malamute is 21-24%. Puppies and more active dogs will need a higher amount of protein.

Grown-up Malamutes love pellets as pellets keep their teeth clean and are something they can chew on. On the other hand, Malamute puppies under 3 months old often prefer powdered food, which is easier to digest.

Another important issue is that commercial food often lacks fat. Most dogs do not like fat, and neither do Malamutes. However, fat is essential, making their coat smoother, increasing their ability to absorb vitamins (some vitamins can only be dissolved in fat). So when feeding, you should add vegetable oil or some fish fat. Adding a little lard is acceptable, but avoid feeding them too much lard as they may get diarrhea.

Natural food for Malamute

In addition to ready-to-eat foods, Malamutes should be given natural foods to keep them interested in eating and to supplement nutrients that lacks in commercial foods. The best method is to give them alternate meals, one with commercial foods and then one with home-cooked foods. Foods that the Malamute loves include:

  • Meat. Beef is what they like best because it is rich in nutrition and low in fat, lean meat, chicken (chicken breast is the best), fish (sea fish is better as it has more protein and less fat).
  • Bread, cookies. Supply carbohydrates and energy.
  • Vegetables. Vegetables provide vitamins, help prevent shredding and strengthen their immune system. Malamutes do not like rice and vegetables, so you need to feed them those food from their early ages. You can mix rice, porridge, and vegetables with minced meat to make them eat. If they do not have a sufficient amount of vegetables, they will find other supplementary sources from grass, leaves or stools of other animals.
